For the Dough:
- 1 cup unsalted butter softened
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp cream of tartar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg optional, for extra holiday spice
For the Topping:
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- Red and green sprinkles or edible glitter optional
Prepare the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
Combine Dry Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
Make the Cinnamon-Sugar Topping
In a small bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon. If desired, add sprinkles or edible glitter to the mix for a holiday look.
Shape and Roll the Cookies
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll dough into 1-inch balls, then roll each ball in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until fully coated.
Bake
Place cookies on the baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set but the centers are still soft. Let them cool on the sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Decorate
If desired, drizzle white chocolate on top or add a few extra sprinkles. Enjoy!
